MEDICINE AND SURGERY
SURGICAL LASER LAB
Use of solid-state lasers in Veterinary Medicine. This
biomedical research in the College of Veterinary
Medicine is capable of assisting engineers and
physicists in the OSU Laser Center with projects
involving the medical applications of lasers.

HOLMIUM YAG LASER
Long-term monitoring and histopathologic evaluation of
experimental animal models will be used to determine
the effects of Ho:YAG laser energy on intervertebral
discs. An alternative to surgical intervention for
prophylactic treatment of degenerative intervertebral
discs has been developed with the dog as a clinical
model.

ADEQUAN-1 RESEARCH
Evaluates this drug's ability to get from the muscle to
the cartilage and be effective in adequate levels for
therapeutic use in the horse.

ADEQUAN-2 CANINE
Evaluates this drug's ability to get to multiple joints
in the dog for treatment of arthritis and hip
dysplasia.

CHONDRAL-CLOT-1
A study in the evaluation of cartilage healing of
various defects in the horse. This research evaluated
various depths and configurations of lesions and how
they affected each other on the same bone in the horse
over a short-term healing period.

EFFECTS OF HOLMIUM YAG LASER RADIATION
YAG Laser on Equine Articular Cartilage adjacent to
Traumatic Lesions: A Histopathological Assessment.
This study followed same format as Chondral-Clot-1 in
that cartilage lesions were created in horses and then
exposed to biostimulatory levels of laser energy to see
what effect it had on cartilage healing.

TENDON SUTURE REPAIR
Investigated suture mesh material that would be sutured
over a tenoblast allograft site to determine the effect
on tendon healing in pigs.

FROZEN SEMEN PROGRAM
This project's objective was to freeze canine semen,
specifically greyhound semen. This has successfully
been accomplished.

PERCUTANEOUS LASER FRAGMENTATION
Developed a technique for endoscopically guided
percutaneous Nd YAG Laser fragmentation of retained
common bile duct stones. Endoscope placed through drain
tubes from previous surgery and porcine is being used
as a model.

SOFT TISSUE EFFECTS
An investigation into the techniques and studies of the
tissue interactions associated with laser tissue
welding. A diode laser will be used to thermally weld
tissues together as an alternative to conventional
sutures or staples.

IN VITRO GROWTH
An investigation into the possibility of providing
better and faster healing to pig tendons. Cells will
be grown and then inserted in vitro into another pig.

THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF A NEW ALKALINIZING AGENT
The therapeutic potential of a new alkalinizing agent
(Carbicarb) will be investigated. The compound will be
administered to normal anesthetized calves.
Hemodynamic, acid-base, and biochemical analyses will
be performed, and the response to Carbicarb infusion
will be compared to sodium bicarbonate infusion. The
purpose of the study is to demonstrate that Carbicarb
may have therapeutic potential for treatment of common
diseases of calves, such as calf scours and birth
asphyxia.

HOLMIUM CARTILAGE 1
This project is a continuation of the Effects of
Holmium YAG Laser Radiation Study. Additional work on
laser stimulation of cartilage repair in the horse
using various histochemical and advanced diagnostics
techniques to further define the effect of laser energy
on cartilage repair in the athletic horse.
