Membership Perceptions of Certification Designations
Professionals in parks and recreation may seek and maintain certification through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Members have debated the value of such certification and the requirements to attain and maintain the certified status. A stratified random sample of 1,247 members from all branches and sections of NRPA provided the basis for contact via survey. Responses (80.3 percent) showed strong support for the certification program, although only 52.5 percent of respondents were certified. Academic requirements for eligibility to "sit" for the certification examination were supported, as were the continuing education requirements to maintain certification. The titles used in the certification designation will require modification prior to inclusion in most job descriptions.
