Dr. Charlotte Ownby, Regents Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Anatomy, Pathology, and Pharmacology, and Director of the Electron Microscope Lab, holds a prairie rattlesnake. Dr. Ownby's research focuses on the improvement of treatment in snakebite victims both in the field and in hospital treatment. Dr. Ownby is president of the International Society of Toxinology whose members study the toxins from natural sources, such as plants and animals, and serves on the editorial board of Toxicon, the official journal of the field. Dr. Ownby has also served as a consultant to the World Health Organization on antivenom for snakebite as well as presenting research at meetings in China, Brazil, Singapore, Israel, and other parts of the world.
